During my time at Heatherwick studio in London, I worked in the ideation and prototyping of kinetic shading devices for a number of giant glass “canopies” for the Google complex in the Silicon Valley.
The shading devices were designed to protect the buildings from glare and heat.
These devices consisted of squares of fabric (handkerchiefs). Each handkerchief covered an 8x8 foot glass panel and wrapped and unwrapped around a motorized central spindle. The handkerchiefs were made with technical fabric and operated on a system of metal cables.
